Celebrating Bennett Wilder: A Journey of Love and Resilience — Indianapolis, Indiana Birth Story

In the world of birth photography, every story is unique, but some stand out as exceptionally poignant reminders of the strength of the human spirit. In 2021, I had the privilege of documenting one such story, the birth of Bennett Wilder, a little angel who left a profound impact on everyone who crossed his path.

Lenore, Lynette’s sister feeling for Benny.

Bennett's journey began with Lynette and Anthony, two remarkable individuals whose love and resilience shone brightly even in the face of heart-wrenching circumstances. Early in Lynette's pregnancy, they received the devastating diagnosis of Trisomy 18, a condition that presented its own set of challenges. Despite the uncertainty that lay ahead, Lynette and Anthony, who are both so special and near and dear to my heart, decided to invite me to photograph Bennett's birth, and their journey unfolded with a rare and touching grace.

At 27 weeks, Lynette noticed a lack of movement from Bennett. Being a Labor and Delivery nurse herself, she instinctively took action, and her worst fears were confirmed—Bennett's tiny heart had stopped beating. In a moment of shock and sadness, she made the courageous decision to bring her precious sleeping baby boy into the world.

I joined Lynette and Anthony as Lynette began to experience contractions, my camera poised to capture every moment of their journey. As the hours passed, they found little solace in preparing a handprint keepsake. Though, this simple act would serve as one of the many tangible connections to Bennett long after his birth.

The moment Bennett emerged into the world was a testament to Lynette and Anthony's unwavering love. He was tiny, fragile, and perfect in every way. Together, they lovingly helped him into Lynette's waiting arms, determined to experience his birth fully, despite knowing they wouldn't get to take him home. In that sacred moment, Lynette held her son close, soaking in his every feature—the softness of his skin, the fuzziness of his brows, and the delicate contours of his sweet little nose.

Bennett, or as we lovingly call him, "Benny Bunny," has a special place in our hearts. he is represented by the numerous stuffed bunnies that fills the Troyer home, and every facet of their lives. They even put his heartbeat inside a weighted bunny so they could always remember the comforting sound of his heart. It is such beautiful evidence to the enduring love they have for their son.

Days later, I was invited back to document a chapter in Bennett's journey that would prove just as heartrending—their son's funeral. The strength and resilience displayed by Lynette and Anthony as they navigated this painful farewell were nothing short of awe-inspiring.

During Bennett's journey, love and support poured in from all corners of their lives. Family members traveled from out of state to be by Lynette and Anthony's side, providing unwavering comfort and strength during their most trying moments. Lynette's co-workers, who share her role as Labor and Delivery nurses, visited, their presence a heartfelt reflection of the deep bond that forms among those who witness the highs and lows of childbirth. Family and friends, with hearts full of love, gathered to see their precious Bennett, cherishing the fleeting moments they had together.

As a birth photographer, I am constantly reminded of the extraordinary capacity of the human spirit to endure and find beauty even in the midst of sorrow. Bennett Wilder's story is a reminder that love transcends boundaries, and that even the shortest of lives can leave a profound impact.

As I continue to tell their story, I am reminded of the enduring power of love, resilience, and the human spirit. Their story is an ongoing testament to the strength of the human heart, and I look forward to sharing their next chapter as they navigate hope and healing while welcoming a new life into their world, all while being surrounded by the comforting presence of bunnies, just like our beloved Benny.

Since Bennett's birth, Lynette has initiated a beautiful project called "Benny Boxes." These thoughtful boxes are crafted with the love and understanding of a stillbirth mama and contain items to comfort and support grieving mothers. Each Benny Box includes:

  • A comforting muslin swaddle, soft and perfect for holding onto a baby's scent.

  • A cuddly bunny for solace.

  • "Mother of All Mothers," a beloved grief book.

  • A list of cherished moments to create with the baby while in the hospital.
